NAHUAL
Nahual es un proyecto del fotógrafo Santiago Sierra Soler. Es el resultado de una exhaustiva travesía interior, que tomó inspiración de sus viajes por Asia, Sudamérica y África, pero que se asentó finalmente en su país: México, específicamente centrada en el yacimiento arqueológico yucateco-maya de Ek' Balam, en la península de Yucatán.
A los 18 años, Santiago Sierra Soler migró de su natal México a Australia para estudiar dirección artística. Una vez finalizados sus estudios, se trasladó a Nueva York, donde montó un estudio y se estableció como fotógrafo de moda, donde ha encontrado el éxito, trabajando para marcas como Chanel, Swarovski, Dior, Nike, Vogue y HBO. Su trabajo también le acercó a grandes celebridades como Beyoncé, Emma Stone, Dua Lipa y Novak Djokovic.
Los nahuales, en la tradición indígena mesoamericana, se refiere a los seres humanos que tienen el poder de cambiar de forma y transformarse en animales, elementos de la naturaleza o realizar actos sobrenaturales. Pero también hace referencia a una forma de introspección que permite a quienes lo practican tener un estrecho contacto con el mundo natural y el mundo espiritual, misma que Santiago retrata, a través de una gran sensibilidad y sentido de la composición.
Nahual is a project by photographer Santiago Sierra Soler. It is the result of an exhaustive inner journey, which took inspiration from his travels in Asia, South America and Africa, but finally settled in his home country: Mexico, specifically focused on the Yucatecan-Maya archaeological site of Ek' Balam, in the Yucatan Peninsula.
At the age of 18, Santiago Sierra Soler migrated from his native Mexico to Australia to study art direction. Once he finished his studies, he moved to New York, where he set up a studio and established himself as a fashion photographer, where he has found success, working for brands such as Chanel, Swarovski, Dior, Nike, Vogue and HBO. His work also brought him close to big celebrities such as Beyoncé, Emma Stone, Dua Lipa and Novak Djokovic.
Nahuales, in Mesoamerican indigenous tradition, refers to human beings who have the power to shape-shift and transform into animals, elements of nature or perform supernatural acts. But it also refers to a form of introspection that allows those who practice it to have a close contact with the natural world and the spiritual world, which Santiago portrays through a great sensitivity and sense of composition.
Nahual es la expresión creativa, el espíritu que busca honrar, respetar y redescubrir nuestro conocimiento ancestral. El proyecto fue posible gracias a la participación de la comunidad, de un dedicado equipo y con la colaboración con el talentoso diseñador de vestuario y estilista Chino Castillo
El libro forma parte de una colección exclusiva de fotolibros impresos en el estado de Oaxaca, editados por Cooperativa la Joplin en colaboración con Manuel García. Fue impreso en Santa María del Tule, Oaxaca, México, por Repro Gráfika en el año 2022 y tuvo un primer tiraje de cincuenta ejemplares.
Nahual is the creative expression, the spirit that seeks to honor, respect and rediscover our ancestral knowledge. The project was possible thanks to the participation of the community, a dedicated team and the collaboration with the talented costume designer and stylist Chino Castillo.
The book is part of an exclusive collection of photobooks printed in the state of Oaxaca, edited by Cooperativa la Joplin in collaboration with Manuel García. It was printed in Santa María del Tule, Oaxaca, Mexico, by Repro Gráfika in 2022 and had a first printing of fifty copies.
